Naming system for BAHNLAND vehicle files

Global structure

The program BAHNLAND was originally written for WINDOWS 3.x systems and shall run there also in the future. Therefore, the names of all files to be used by this program are restricted to 8 characters for the netto name. Nevertheless, the vehicle should be recognized by its filename. I tried to realize this by using the following naming system:

Global structure from left to right:
Character 1
Characters 2-5
Characters 6-7
Character 8
Vehicle group
Vehicle class number or other description
Vehicle characteristics, colors, paintings
Bitmap variant

Character 1: Vehicle group

9

Freight wagons
Trailers and driving trailers are associated to the same vehicle group like the corresponding motor car.

Zeichen 2-5: Vehicle description
The desription differs from the vehicle groups and also from the assignment to the former German state railways, German state railways, private railways and international railways. This part of the filename is further classified in the chapters below.

Zeichen 6-7: Coloring
Coloring, painting variants (e.g. corporate signs) or freight variants. A color description can represent a single color (ro=rot (red), ge=gelb (yellow), gn=grün (green), ...) or a combination of two colors (gg=grau/gelb (gray/yellow), rb=rot/blau (red/blue), ...). There also may be described different intensities (db=dunbelblau (dark blue), hb=hellblau (light blue)) or "product colors" (vr=verkehrsrot (traffic red), ar =altrot (classic red) of the former Deutsche Bundesbahn).

If there is only one character used for representing a color, the assignment cannot be clear (db=dunkelblau (dark blue) and dunkelbraun (dark brown)) or immediately identified in any case (hg=hellgelb, ha=hellgrau, hn=hellgrün (in German, all three colors yellow, gray and green are beginning with "g")). Here, a look to the picture itself may be necessary to identify the color, painting or freigt description (always based on German keywords).

Zeichen 8: Bitmap variant
Last but not least, the last character of the vehicle filename is also used to distinguish different vehicle bitmaps, but without using a specific rule for selecting the character.

Characters 2-5 in filenames of locomotives and multiple units

For vehicles of the German state railways, the DRG/DB class numbers are used including the first character of the filename (vehicle group) and possibly a subclass number (which may be victitious). For vehicles from the former German state railways, from private or from international railways, instead of the class number another "popular" description of the vehicle may be used. Or the official class number of the vehicle will be shortened for placing it within the 4 characters described here.

Characters 2-5 in filenames for coaches

The characters 2 and 3 represent a way of class description. In the main, the coaches are classified in chronological order. In some cases, there may be able a conclusion from the class used in the filename to the official description of the vehicle (especially with german vehicles). The characters 4 and 5 contain the passenger class description or the description how the vecicle is used. With vehicles containing less or more than 4 axles, the number of axles may be contained at position 2 of the filename. Then, all other descriptions are shifted to the right by one character with renouncement of the bitmap variant character. If the coach comes from a former German state railway (era 1), a "former German state railway character" is inserted before the passenger class description.

Characters 2-5 in filenames for freight wagons

The second character of the filename specifies the international UIC type for freight wagons as it is used by DB/DBAG since 1980. The characters 3-5 represent the class number of the decribed wagon. Freight wagon types which are not found in the DB/DBAG numbering list (e.g. wagons which were sorted out before 1980 or only part of other railways than DB/DBAG), are included to the present numbering system in my own opinion. For freight wagons from the former German state railways, the "former German state railway character" which was described in the coaches section is inserted at position 3 of the filename, and the positions 4 and 5 are numbered consecutively.
